Small Group

Advanced Geodesic Focusing Ten Month Course
using
Domain Focusing: the 3 Logics of Growth

Taught by Robert L. Lee, Ph.D. and staff

This is the second Tenmonth course in a focusing training program leading to certification as a Focusing Trainer or as a Focusing Oriented Psychotherapist (FOT).* This course is also ideal for already certified Focusing Trainers and Focusing Oriented Psychotherapists who want more training.

What the Small Group applied course involves:
1. Workshops:
Four 4 hour didactic and hands-on workshops in small groups (4-6 persons) and one large group 6 hour workshop
2. Applied Focusing Sessions:
Four 3 person 3 hour (3p3h) applied focusing sessions
3. 4some Collaboration Groups:
Eight 2 hour phone collaboration groups which are done by the 4some independently following a template
4. Weekly Partnership
5. Practice Teaching:
1:1 teaching of someone who does not know focusing. Or it can be some other context for transmitting Focusing. You can shape the "who" and the quantity of this to your project.
6. Project Development.
Your project should be creating a context where you could transmit Focusing to others. The Project is for your satisfaction, not for satisfying the instructor.
7. International Collaboration Groups.
These will be in areas related to your Project. You will learn how to create them.

It is anticipated that #s 5-7, Practice Teaching, Project Development, and International Collaboration Groups, may well need further work after certification before feeling complete.

Workshops
There are four 4-hour small group (4-6) workshops and one 6-hour large group workshop. These happen every two months. The workshops prepare you for further professional application and will further the development of your project. Workshop Themes:
1. Project Development and Undervisioning (egalitarian supervision) as a supportive Process
2. Application in Phase 1:Getting Started and Phase 2:Domain Linking
3. Application in Phase 3: Entering and Phase
4: Shifting 4. Developing Colleagueal Community in the Focusing World via your Project. Large Group.
5. Application with difficult situations --depression, trauma, anxiety, disassociation, learning disability-ADD, negativity, low self-image, physical illness, spiritual crisis . . .

Applied Focusing via 3 person 3 hour (3p3h) Groups
There are four 3p3h or 4p4h groups. These are with Robert Lee. These workshops give you direct experience of applied focusing both in receiving and in watching. They also are an opportunity to work directly with your focusing process and to make suggestions and/or interventions. These sessions are in-person.

Independent 4some Collaboration Groups
There are monthly 4some collaboration groups in person or on conference calls. Each person gets to be in the role of facilitator at least twice. In the partnership portion of the groups, there will be "undervisioning" (egalitarian supervision) regarding application efforts or projects or something in the way of going forward with those. In "undervisioning", after 2/3 of the session the listener proposes one or more places for going further, and, if one of those is accepted, the listener has a more active role in the last third of the session.

Focusing Partnership
Each person will practice partnership at least weekly. You can find a partner outside the group (possibly related to your project) and stay with that person as long as you want or you can partner with someone within the group and change partners at workshops. Having some experience of both during the course would be ideal.

Practice Teaching or Using Focusing Professionally
Each workshop will present some basic ways teaching focusing and for using focusing professionally. You need to plan some practice using these basic ways in some way related to your project. The two most common ways: work with a psychotherapy client; or find someone who volunteers to be your student for 4 sessions, but there are other ways as well. To prepare for these "real" applications you can use "undervisioning" with your weekly focusing partner from the course for the last third of your focusing partnership sessions. See description under Collaboration Groups above.

Project Development
Each person in the course will design and carry out a project for applying focusing oriented psychotherapy. These projects are for facilitating your entry into focusing not for satisfying an external requirement. International Collaboration Groups You will identify the larger Focusing Area in which your Project exists and learn how to find local and international others within that area. Once found you will do partnership and collaboration groups related to your project with those you find. Thus you create a fertile context for your work on your project.

Cost of course: $1500

Three of the training groups were for psychotherapists, four were for professionals of various kinds. A licensed psychologist, Lee has developed a new model for teaching focusing (Domain Focusing), he has developed a theory and practice for change on the macro level for stubborn problems (Changing the Unchangeable), he has developed a comprehensive practice for working with difficulties in felt sense formation (Elusive Felt Sensing). He has developed special methods for using focusing in couples' therapy and in group therapy; he has applied focusing to Quaker spirituality. He has applied focusing to bodywork, health and to physical problems.
